History of Napoleon - History tells us that on February 9, 1820, William Wilson laid out the plan for the "Town of Napoleon" after purchasing 160 acres in a land grant from the United States government on September 16, 1819.  Just seven days after Napoleon was platted, William Wilson started selling town lots.  On February 16, 1820, George Craig of Vevay purchased 32 lots.  It was Craig who constructed the first Ripley County Courthouse in Versailles in 1821 and represented Ripley and Switzerland counties in the Indiana Senate from 1822 to 1824.  When he died during the cholera epidemic of 1833, the bulk of his holdings in Napoleon were deemed to his son-in-law Miles Mendenhall and his wife Nancy.  The Mendenhall family was among the leaders of Napoleon, the last of the family being Edward P. Mendenhall, who was in business in Napoleon in the early 1900's.  The post office is rich in history, having been established on January 19, 1821, with the founder of the town William Wilson serving as the first postmaster.
